Prove It Series: Part 2

by Mar 11, 2024Controversial subject, Faith

Many people today believe that science and Christianity are not compatible; that they conflict with one another.  This is communicated in many high schools and colleges. I see it everywhere on social media.  One of the main reasons 18 to 29 year old’s, who grew up going to church, youth group and summer camp, are walking away from Christianity because they have come to believe that Christianity is anti-science.  Their reasoning for leaving the faith can be summarized by, “I’m going to choose fact over faith.”

I believe the notion that Christianity is anti-science is a classic strawman argument.  Meaning, intentionally misrepresenting a position instead of having a real argument.  It’s harder to defeat a real argument, therefore, strawmen are very easy to knock over.

The premise in our culture today is a belief that science is all-powerful, all-knowing, and right almost all the time.  However, over the course of history this is inaccurate.  There have been plenty of mistakes, plenty of confusion, and plenty of incredible damage done when science has been completely wrong and inaccurate. Here are a couple of examples:

  • During the recent COVID experience in our country, we saw major dividing lines with proclamations of “I’m following the science!” to accusations “Your anti-science views will end up killing people!” Beyond many people dying, COVID caused confusion, division, and disunity across our land. There were some studies that said wearing masks will slow the spread and other studies that said wearing masks are completely ineffective. When COVID vaccines hit the market, additional fault lines spread everywhere. Some people took every possible vaccine and booster shot while other resisted all vaccines completely. Mandating people to take the vaccine threw gasoline on this fire. Many people lost their jobs over refusing to be vaccinated. Added confusion resulted when natural immunity, a long held scientific reality, was pushed aside and ignored by many in the scientific community. In February 2024, Dr. Fauci was asked about scientific bases for the 6 foot social distancing mandates that were pervasive during COVID. He said, “The 6 foot social distancing was not science. It just kind of popped up and we went with it.” Sadly, but understandably so, many people today are more skeptical of the CDC, vaccines, and the sort because the “science” was confusing, shifting, unreliable, political, and at times, flat out wrong.

  • For centuries, the ancient world believed the earth was flat. That was until the 17th century introduced empirical evidence for the planet’s spherical shape. In modern times, however, the notion of a flat earth has been revived and promoted on social media despite scientific evidence to the contrary

  • As far back as 3000 years ago, bloodletting was a scientific method to cure diseases. From the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and into the 19th century, scientists and physicians around the world actually believed they could get rid of a disease if blood was drained out of the patient. Our first President, George Washington, died because of bloodletting. Now, scientists say, based upon his symptoms, George Washington either had strep throat or pneumonia. But at the time, bloodletting was a widely held scientific method to help cure illnesses and disease.

  • A hundred years ago, most astronomers believed our whole universe consisted of just one galaxy: our own Milky Way. In the 1920’s someone by the name of Edwin Hubble came on the scene and was the first to claim there is a universe of galaxies beyond the boundaries of the Milky Way. Astronomers today say the universe has between 200 million to up to 2 trillion galaxies.

I understand that some of these examples above caused no major damage when the science was wrong.  But the next two examples caused MAJOR damage to mankind.

  • The scientific position of eugenics was deadly. It wasn’t just the Nazis who tried to improve their national identity through the selective breeding of their population. Germany took eugenics to the next logical level by killing off inferior races to protect their own people. Eugenics was not a fringe movement. Starting in the late 1800s, leaders, scientists, and intellectuals worldwide perpetuated eugenic beliefs and policies based on common racist and xenophobic attitudes. Eugenics was practiced in Germany, Canada, America, and other countries around the world. Many of these beliefs and policies still exist

  • Racist theories used science to reinforce racial discrimination. The scientific community believed, tested, and practiced that certain behavioral traits are attributed to certain ethnicities. This resulted in stereo-typing certain ethnicities into being inferior to others.

I believe that science and faith can coexist and complement each other. In fact, the Bible is filled with scientific foreknowledge and accuracy thousands of years before discovery. Christianity and science can coexist, has coexisted, can complement, and is complementing each other in the past, the present, and into the future.

Throughout history, many of the legendary founding fathers of science were Christians. You may have heard of Isaac Newton, Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Louis Pasteur, and Francis Bacon, to name a few.  Proverbs 18:15 says, “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; for the ears of the wise seek it out.”  God has created mankind to have inquisitive minds that wonder how things happen, why they happen, and pursues knowledge, discernment, and understanding to find out those answers. God has put this pursuit into the DNA of His creation.

Examples of Biblical Foreknowledge and Accuracy

The Second Law of Thermodynamics

This law is the foundational rule that determines the fate of the universe. It is the Law that everything in the universe will have a gradual decline into disorder. After the age of 30, you begin to realize your body starts deteriorating and seems to speed up as you get older. That’s why human bodies age and eventually die, why stars age and eventually burnout, why buildings age and need massive upgrades to remain useful, etc.  Scripture was proclaiming this Law before the word thermodynamics was invented.

“In the beginning you laid out the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment…” Psalm 102:25-26

“The creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay…” Romans 8:21

Earth in space

God’s Word described the earth hanging in space before a photo of the earth was ever thought of, let alone before a camera was ever invented.

“He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.” Psalm 104:19

Did you know how important the moon is to our planet? If the moon were ever to move, life on earth is over. The tilting of earth’s axis in alignment with the moon triggers our four seasons: fall, winter, spring and summer. Unless you live in California, and you have only two seasons: nice and hot.

The sun knows when to go down and when it is to rise again. It’s like clockwork. We now have apps on our phone that tells us when the sun’s going down and when it will rise. It’s like it was designed to operate with precision.

“He marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep.” Proverbs 8:27-28

Thousands of years before the whole idea of oceanology was even thought of scripture declared there are fountains in the ocean. In other passages in the Bible announces there are valleys, mountains, springs, and rivers in the oceans. In 2019, off the coast of Mexico they just discovered a spring at the bottom of the ocean. Others have been found at the bottom of the Black Sea. Oceanology is just playing catch up to what was recorded in the Bible thousands of years ago.

“He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.” Job 26:7

“He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth…” Isaiah 40:22

The Bible declared these truths thousands of years before man entered space, landed on the moon, and turned around and took photos of the earth. Those famous photos proved the Bible to be true when they showed our earth suspended in space as a circular planet.

Human Health

“For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised…” Genesis 17:12

Why circumcise little boys in the first place? And why on the eighth day? Those are reasonable questions. It was discovered in the last century that circumcising little boys was helpful in preventing disease and infections. God knew what He was doing. God was way ahead of science and the medical world in what day was the best day to have minor surgery on children. In the last century scientists discovered that the best day for minor surgery on children was on the eighth day. On the third day after birth, the prothrombin and vitamin K that triggers blood coagulation, reaches 30% of effectives. However, on the 8th day, God’s special protein and vitamin spike to 110% effectiveness! Again, the Bible’s foreknowledge and accuracy is amazing!

“For the life of a creature is in the blood…” Leviticus 17:11

This why you don’t let the blood out to cure disease. No, life is found in the blood. We know now how important blood transfusions are. These truths were in scripture thousands of years before discovery.

Infectious Diseases

In 1846, the head of a hospital in Vienna, Austria was Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis.  The primary role of his hospital was helping pregnant women deliver babies. The death rate in 1846 in this hospital and hospitals all over all over Europe, was 18%. The cause of death was referred to as Labor Fever.  Dr. Semmelweis went on sabbatical and had a friend of his, Dr. Kolletschka, take his place. He did exactly what Dr. Semmelweis did, autopsies in the morning followed by examinations of pregnant women afterwards.

During one of the autopsy’s, somehow Dr. Kolletschka got bummed by one of the observing students and got a very small cut on his hand. He went over to the basin, washed it with water, took a towel and dried it off and went about his day. Within two weeks Dr. Kolletschka died with the same symptoms pregnant women had died from. They couldn’t call it labor fever though. Dr. Semmelweis returns home from sabbatical, hears about his friend dying and does a deep dive investigation. The finding revealed the following: those doing autopsies in the morning did so with no hand coverings, they all used the same water bowl to wash their hands and used the same towel to dry their hands.

Dr. Semmelweis immediately implemented the following: everyone involved with an autopsy had to use their own individual wash basin and clean towel. He also instructed all the nurses to change the bed sheets after someone died. As a result, the death rate dropped from 18% to 1-3%. Dr. Semmelweis spent the rest of his life encouraging hospitals around the world to implement his new procedures to save the lives of pregnant women. It wasn’t until 1861 that Louis Pasteur discovered the invisible but deadly predator called bacteria.

However, 3500 years prior, God gave us a warning for how to deal with dead bodies and a solution in how to prevent infections. It is found in Numbers 19:6-12. The same formula for what now how to make the infection preventing lye soap is the same ingredients given in Numbers 19. In 1846, tens of thousands of women could have been saved if the instructions for preventing bacteria were followed. Instructions that God gave 3500 years ago.

Science and faith can coexist, has coexisted, can complement, and has complemented each other over centuries. In fact, the Bible is filled with many scientific foreknowledge and accuracy that were there thousands of years before discovery.

What Science Is Unable To Do

Too many people confuse or mixed empirical science and forensic science. Those are two different science categories. Empirical science is repeated events you observe, record, test, and repeat. This science is how we get new medicine, iPhones, and Tesla’s. Forensic science or  historical science is about non-repeatable events. That’s why when it comes to the origin of the universe or the origin of life, natural science hits a brick wall.  Why? Because it happened once. (See my previous post for more information about the origin of the universe.)

I’m gonna finish this post by giving four things science cannot explain.  It’s not a knock on science. It’s just a fact. These four things point to our need for help beyond the natural or science world. They are also the reason why FAITH is important alongside of scientific facts that have been proven by empirical evidence.

  • The Laws of Logic and Reason. In science, logic and reason are necessary. Science is dependent upong logic and reason but cannot explain them scientifically.

  • Objective Moral Law and Value Judgments. I wrote more about this in my previous post. We intuitively know that things certain things are right and certain things are wrong. We also intuitively know that certain things have value and certain things have less value. But science is descriptive, not prescriptive. Science can tell you WHAT happened, but they can’t tell you WHAT OUGHT TO HAPPEN. Albert Einstein said you can find the moral basis for science, but you cannot find the scientific basis for morals. It’s beyond natural, empirical science.

  • Purpose and Meaning. Every human being needs to understand that they have purpose and life has meaning. When people don’t know their purpose or meaning, most lose the desire to live. Science cannot explain WHY because purpose and meaning comes outside the realm of science. Science can tell us WHO we are – male or female – at least it used to – but science cannot explain WHY we are here and HOW we have meaning.

  • The Origin of the Laws of Nature. The laws of nature are the very laws that science must have in order to pursue knowledge, to test, to gather information, and make observations. Science doesn’t have an explanation of why these laws are here and where they came from. This is beyond science. Science is an expert in the natural world – what we can see, touch, taste, and test.  All of these are very important aspects of human life. But the questions that science cannot answer are not in the natural world. They can only be truly answered by what is beyond nature – by the supernatural. This is probably the reason why many, not all, but a very high percentage of scientists today, don’t believe in the supernatural. They don’t believe in miracles. Most of them do not believe there is a God.

Much of life’s real questions that really give us purpose and meaning and understanding is beyond the natural world.  Now you’re entering into the supernatural world which the Bible provides direction and answers. Like I wrote in the previous post – God wants to be found and he wants us to know him. Because humans are made in the image of God, we are inquisitive. We wonder how thing happened. Why? Because God has put in us a desire to find answers – answers found in both science and in faith.

Biblical Christianity is not anti-Science. Science and faith have and will continue to coexist and complement each other, just as God has designed.
